Who will win the ‘Battle of the Compound’ when defending champ St. Angela’s lock horns with neighbours St. Agnes in the final of the Courts Pee Wee Football Championship today at 15:00 hrs at the Thirst Park ground.
Emotions are expected to run high as the schools are separated by a wall, dubbed by some as the ‘local Berlin’. St. Angela’s is statistically the best team in the tournament and is the favourite, as it tries to create history by becoming the first team to successfully retain the crown.
The Thomas Street unit is the second side since St. Pius [2013 victor] to reach consecutive finals, sealing their berth in the final at the expense of the latter, via a 1-0 margin.
Offensively, St. Angela’s has recorded a tournament leading 19 goals. Seon Cato is the event’s top shot with 10 strikes, while his team-mates Antwoine Vincent, Antonio McAthur and Omarie Nelson have scored four, two and two goals each. Defensively, the champs’ are even more daunting, as they are yet to concede a goal.
However the noisy neighbours are no pushover, and are more than capable of derailing St. Angela’s pursuit of uncharted glory. Although their offensive numbers can’t measure up to their heralded foe, St. Agnes possess a formidable defensive record. They have only conceded a solitary goal, in a 1-0 loss to Redeemer in their opening game.
In attack, the Church Road outfit has scored nine goals, with David Xavier and Nikhail Carter netting three goals apiece.
The third place playoff, at 14:00hrs is a repeat of last year’s contest, as St. Pius will encounter fierce rival West Ruimveldt. History favors the Middle Road based unit as they have defeated West Ruimveldt on both occasions they have met in the tournament.
The 5-16 positional plate section will commence at 11:00hrs.
