North Georgetown District 11 finished atop the points standing of the 56th edition of the Guyana Teacher Union (GTU)/Ministry of Education/Digicel National Schools Swimming Championships held yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre at Pattensen.
The aquatic athletes from the city based schools, once again swam away with the winner’s trophy after racking up 401 points to secure first place while defending overall champions Upper Demerara/Kwakwani finished second with 273 points. North West completed the podium with 207 points.
South Georgetown (196) and Essequibo Coast Pomeroon (182) were the other districts in the top five.
The points table was completed by East Georgetown (179), Cuyuni- Mazaruni (172), Rupununi (126), East Bank Demerara (53), West Demerara (27), Potaro- Supenaam (15), West Berbice (14), East Coast Demerara (10), New Amsterdam – Canjie (10) and Corentyne (1).
On the individual side, South Georgetown’s Aleka Persaud won the girls 11 and under 50M free style and backstroke events while North Georgetown’s Raekwon Noel achieved the same feat in the boys category.
National swimmers, Amy Grant, Jamaal Skeete, Nikita Fiedtkou Anna Isaacs were also some of the standout swimmers.
The most talked about event of the day was the highly competitive boys 200M freestyle relay which came down to a tie between North Georgetown and East Georgetown. Both teams recorded a time of 1:54.66. On the distaff side, that event was easily won by North Georgetown, clocking a time of 2:06.57 ahead of Rupununi.
