Digicel Guyana Incorporated on Saturday presented Fruta Conquerors’ rising star Jeremy Garrett with the airfare to attend his tryout at European club Sporting Lisbon of Portugal.
Garrett is slated to depart local shores today to take part in a nine-day training course at the third largest professional football club in Portugal.
The initiative was made possible through Alex Bunbury, founder of the Alex Bunbury Sports and Academic Academy (ABSAA). The Canadian Hall of Famer played most of his professional career in the Iberian nation with Marítimo.
Customer Care executive Sherwin Osbourne during a brief handing over ceremony at the company’s Kingston Head-Office said, their support was prompted following recommendations from Bunbury as well as Garrett’s exploits in guiding Chase Academy to the Digicel Schools Football Championship.
Garrett during brief remarks thanked the company for their timely support, declaring that his intention is to be a good ambassador for the country during the stint. He further thanked all the relevant stakeholders who were responsible for helping to shape his progression in the sport. Meanwhile, Fruta Conquerors’ secretary Daniel Thomas said “Jeremy started his playing career at the tender age of eight years under the watchful eyes of several coaches at the club inclusive of Kurt Cadogan and Sampson Gilbert to become the talented player today”.
Thomas revealed “Jeremy has always been supported by the club in many aspects and is a product of the club’s summer programme which has been in existence for many years”.
He noted “He is an ambassador of the club and has represented his country at the u17 level, of which he was the captain in the last CFU Tournament in 2016”.
“Jeremy also represented the country at the Carifta Games and is a champion at the Digicel and Milo tournaments so we are very proud of him from this opportunity. The club has assisted him financially over the years and has contributed once again towards this sojourn”, he added.
