Mayor of Lethem Carlton Beckles and Deputy Mayor Maxine Welch were re-elected on Thursday last, when mayoral elections were held in that municipality.
Beckles told Stabroek News that he was satisfied with the outcome of the internal elections. He said the town council had been able to make changes during its tenure, despite financial burdens. These include the construction of a fire station and a nursery school and the hiring of security guards for the markets.
“Things have been moving nicely… The councillors know where we come from and they know where we are going. In the new year the council would be embarking on several infrastructural projects which include street lighting, roads and drainage. Rehabilitative work would also be done on community properties,” the mayor pointed out.
He went on to say that in 2017 the council expects to get funding from the Ministries of Communities and Public Infrastructure to build better roads and install the street lights.
Meanwhile, internal elections in the municipality of Anna Regina were held on November 29 with Mayor Rabindranauth Mohan and Deputy Mayor Darshan Persaud being re-elected.
