A Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident was tragically killed on Sunday evening after she was crushed by a concrete wall which collapsed in the bathroom area of her house which is currently under renovation.
Dead is Shoia Malissa Europe, 30, of Lot 5 Junior Staff Compound, Great Diamond, EBD who was bathing at the time the incident occurred.
The woman was at home alone and neighbours said they did not hear any screams or sounds which would have indicated that something was amiss. It was not until around 10.15 pm that Europe’s lifeless body was discovered pinned under the wall by her father. It was estimated that she was crushed to death between 6 pm and 10 pm.
Relatives related to this newspaper that when the police were alerted and they removed Europe’s body, various bones were seen protuding from her neck and she had bled profusely.
When Stabroek News visited the house yesterday, relatives were still trying to come to terms with what had occurred.
Lashawn Emmanuel, a cousin of the dead woman, said Europe’s house was under renovation where some old walls were being replaced by new ones. “The workers had already start building these new walls but at the same time they didn’t remove the old ones yet… They did break part, part of [the old wall] which make it weak,” Emmanuel explained.
Police visited the scene and carried out their investigations and according to relatives the incident is being treated as an accident.
Europe’s body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
