Cyclists who distinguished themselves throughout the 2016 season were rewarded on Sunday evening when Guyana Cycling News (GCN) and other stakeholders held the third annual award ceremony at the Bunker 81 Bar.
The riders who received the marquee awards were Orville Hinds (Senior Male Cyclist of The Year), Raphael Leung (Junior Male Cyclists of The Year), Junior Niles (Masters U-45), Raymond Newton (Masters O-45), Claire Fraser-Green (Female Cyclists of The Year) and Shaquel Agard (Most Improved Cyclist).
From shoulder to shoulder sprints to the finish line to courageous solo break-away moves, the riders kept racing fans on the edge of our seats throughout the year.
The festivity was GCN’s way of thanking and rewarding them for their amazing performances.
Other awardees included: Christine Matheson (Runner Up Female Cyclist of The Year), Whitney Poyer (Improved Female Cyclist ), Geron Williams (Outstanding Cyclist International Races) and Keon Thomas (Outstanding Mountain Bike Cyclist).
Hinds once again emerged as the top wheelsman after racking up 11 wins and 198 points, 29 more than second place finisher and Team Evolution club mate, Michael Anthony.
Anthony had seven victories for the season which was again dominated by Team Evolution riders.
The much improved and consistent Agard completed the podium with 160 points, three wins and several top five placings during the year which saw 49 road, circuit and stage races being held.
Sunday’s fixture was a fitting end to an exciting cycling season which rolled off on January 3 and concluded on November 20.
