A car that was taken from a Sheet Anchor teenager at gunpoint last week in the vicinity of Angoy’s Avenue, was discovered on Saturday last in Georgetown.
Commander of B Division, Errol Watts explained to Stabroek News that a bulletin on the carjacking was broadcast throughout police stations countrywide. On Saturday, police intercepted the new model, button-start, white Fielder wagon, PTT 6559, and took its three occupants into custody.
According to the Commander, the alleged perpetrators had made no changes to the licence plate. He also stated that an ID parade was held yesterday and the three men were positively identified by the driver of the car. The men are being held at the Reliance Police Station and are likely to be placed before the court today.
Kalicharan Sookchan also known as ‘Amit’, 17, of Lot 98 Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, Berbice had told Stabroek News that he had dropped off the owner of the car, Shawn Nandlall, at Pitt Street, New Amsterdam and was driving towards New Street, when he heard someone shout “Kalicharan”. Sookchan who had denied that he was operating a private car as a taxi, said he picked up the man and took him to a location in Angoy’s Avenue, where he was asked to wait. Two other men joined the first occupant and he was ordered to proceed to the Main Road in New Amsterdam. However, he explained that as he attempted to turn the car, one man placed a gun to his head and ordered him out. According to Sookchan, the first man he picked up then drove the car to a bushy area not too far away, where they taped his hands behind his back and subsequently left him. Sookchan’s driver’s licence along with his Samsung Galaxy S5 phone was left in the car.
