Rain yesterday put a damper on the top-of-the-table clash between defending West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional four-day champions Guyana Jaguars and arch rivals Barbados Pride forcing play to be called off prematurely.
Replying to Guyana Jaguars’ first innings score of 311 all out, the Barbados Pride were 48-2 when play was called off in the final session of the day/night encounter at the Providence National Stadium.
Barbados Pride, who are in second place trail points leaders the Guyana Jaguars by 263 runs with eight wickets intact.
Earlier, one and one half hour’s play was lost in the opening session and when play finally got underway at around 4.30pm, openers Anthony Alleyne and Kraigg Brathwaite put on an opening stand of 15 before Alleyne, attempting to square cut a delivery from Raymon Reifer was caught at gully by Rajindra Chandrika for eight.
Two runs later the Jaguars were celebrating the prized wicket of Barbados skipper and West Indies opener Brathwaite who hooked a short delivery from keon Joseph and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble. This was to be the Jaguars’ last success as Shai Hope, with three boundaries in his unbeaten 20 and Shamarh Brooks not out on 10 saw the team to the dinner interval.
There was to be no player after the interval as rain completely washed out the remaining two sessions and play was called off.
On the opening day the Guyana Jaguars were indebted to veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul who scored an even 100 in the team’s first innings score of 311. West Indies U19 captain Shimron Hetmeyer made 60 and Vishaul Singh 40.
