A new champion will be crowned in the Smalta Girls Pee Wee football tournament after St. Angela’s defeated defending champion St. Stephen’s 1-0 in the quarterfinal round yesterday.
Nikosi St. Jules was the difference on the day, scoring in the 24th minute via the penalty spot at the Ministry of Education ground following a handball infraction. The powerful right foot strike struck the crossbar and settled into the back of the net.
St. Angela’s will now oppose South Ruimveldt in the semi-final round after the latter defeated Enterprise by a 2-0 scoreline in their quarterfinal fixture.
Raven Jacobs and Shania Sealey scored in the 17th and 26th minute respectively. In the other semi-final matchup, St. Pius will oppose West Ruimveldt following quarterfinal wins over North Georgetown and St. Agnes respectively.
St. Pius defeated North Georgetown 2-1. Donna Lowe and Kerry Boyce scored in the fifth and 20th minute apiece. On target in the loss was Alicia James in the 26th minute.
West Ruimveldt edged St. Agnes 2-0 compliments of an own goal in the 19th minute and an Amanda McPherson strike in the 29th minute.
Meanwhile, in the playoff for 9-16 positions, F.E. Pollard defeated Redeemer 2-1. Talia Wharton bagged a double in the fifth and eighth minute. Scoring for the losers in the 13th minute was Oldacia Wilson.
In the same section, Winfer Gardens, Tucville and Smith Memorial defeated St. Gabriel’s, Stella Maris and St. Margaret’s respectively via walkover. The event resumes tomorrow at the same venue.
At 10:00hrs, St. Margaret’s will oppose St. Gabriel’s and Stella Maris will tackle Redeemer in the 13-16 section. In the 9-12 zone, Smith Memorial will battle Winfer Gardens and Tucville will tackle F.E. Pollard from 10:45hrs.
The 5-8 section will then pit Enterprise against dethroned champs St. Stephen’s and North Georgetown against St. Agnes at 11:30hrs. In the semi-final round, South Ruimveldt will lock horns with St. Angela’s while West Ruimveldt will oppose St. Pius at 12:15hrs.
Winner of the tourney will walk-away with the championship and medals while the second, third and fourth place finishers will receive the respective accolades.
On the individual side, prizes will also be awarded to the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goalscorer and Best Goalkeeper respectively.
