Dear Editor,
We have noted two items in your issue of 9 December 2016 that need clarifying.
While Help & Shelter collaborates with the government, particularly the Ministry of Social Protection, in various areas of its work, it is not a government agency but an independent non-governmental organisation and the shelter for abused women and their children is wholly owned and run by Help & Shelter.
In relation to 87(2) of the Sexual Offences Act, appointees to the National Task Force with responsibility for law enforcement, health and human and social service, Help & Shelter was appointed to the task force and attended the very small number of meetings held before it fell into complete inactivity despite our innumerable requests for meetings to be convened.
We welcome the revival of the task force and look forward to it finally carrying out the activities mandated by the legislation.
Yours faithfully,
Desiree Ramdeen
