The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), the body tasked with promoting the work of the local sport fraternity, will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday at its new headquarters in Liliendaal.
At this year’s AGM, the umbrella associations will select the office bearers to serve on the association for the next four years and a familiar face, K. Juman-Yassin, will be seeking re-election for the top post.
The incumbent president spoke to Stabroek Sport yesterday about his chances of being re-elected, the electoral process and also the recent criticism he has received from another section of the print media which continuously questions his stewardship.
Juman-Yassin said he has no knowledge who else will be contesting for the presidency but he is confident of returning to the helm.
“My chances are good, I am confident of being re-elected but it all depends on the associations and how they vote.”
Quizzed on the of the transparency of the election, Juman-Yassin maintained the the process has always been fair and mentioned that he along with the members of the executive will soon decide whether the media will be invited to attend and cover the event.
Dubbed as the ‘Man who stayed too long’ in a recent article, Juman-Yassin who has occupied the top post in excess of 20 years, then commented on the harsh criticisms he has received from the print media outlet.
“I am the type of person who likes to set the record straight, but I was advised by the associations not to respond at this time and I have taken their advice. I have chosen to follow their advice and perhaps I will respond whenever the time is right following the elections.”
According to sources, Attorneys-at-law Roysdale Forde, Nigel Hughes, David Fernandes and Vidushi Persaud will contest the post of GOA president.
The AGM is scheduled to get underway at 17:00hrs.
