An Essequibo Coast resident was killed on Thursday night, when a drunk driver crashed into the back of his motorcycle on the Hampton Court Public Road.
The dead man has been identified as Bajnauth Samaroo called ‘Suresh,’ 62, of Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast. Stabroek News was told that the incident occurred around 6.35 pm.
Commander of ‘G’ Division Kalesh Pareshram told Stabroek News that from preliminary investigations it appeared that the driver of motor car PJJ 5803 was attempting to overtake Samaroo who was riding a motorcycle when the car collided with the rear of the motorcycle.
As a result of the impact, Samaroo was pitched off the motorcycle and landed several feet away, while the motorcycle was flung into the trench.
As residents heard the sound of the collision they quickly rushed to the public road where they picked up Samaroo, who was in an unconscious state, and rushed him to the Suddie Public Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
The commander explained to Stabroek News, the driver was tested and found to be over the legally prescribed alcohol intake amount.
He is currently in police custody assisting with investigation.
