A Lodge resident was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with armed robbery.
It is alleged that on December 12, at D’Urban Street Lodge, Cheddi Bacchus, 29, of Lot 28 D’Urban Street Lodge, while being in the company of another and armed with an ice pick, robbed Troy Braithwaite of two cell phones worth $120,000.
Bacchus, who is a mason by profession, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Annette Singh.
The Police Prosecutor objected to bail, citing the nature and penalty of the crime and the fact that a weapon was used in the process. The Prosecutor also told the court that both cell phones were recovered on Bacchus by the police.
According to the facts of the matter, on the day in question, Braithwaite was in a shop when the accused along with another man cornered him with an ice pick and took away his cell phones.
Magistrate Singh remanded Bacchus to prison and adjourned the matter until December 30 for statements.
