Goals on either side of halftime from eventual joint Most Valuable Player (MVP) winners Nikasi St. Jules and Carletta Ross propelled St. Angela’s to the Smalta Girls Pee Wee football title after they defeated West Ruimveldt 2-1 yesterday.
The Thomas Street institution signalled their championship intentions early at the Ministry of Education ground when St. Jules unleashed a curling free kick which crashed into the woodwork in the third minute.
The deadlock was eventually broken three minutes later as St. Jules finished into the right corner from the left side of the field. West Ruimveldt thought they had equalised in the 13th minute as tourney leading scorer Gabriella McGarrell netted, only to see the goal disallowed by the official for a foul on the goalkeeper.
With the score remaining unchanged heading into the half time break, Carletta Ross made her presence felt as she found the back of the net in the 27th minute.
The pint-sized attacker stole the ball from a defender on the right side of the field before stabbing her effort through the legs of the goalkeeper, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
West Ruimveldt eventually scored a consolation goal in the 29th minute as McGarrell blasted a right-foot shot down the centre of the net.
With the win, St. Angela’s became the second team after Stella Maris to clinch both the boys and girls’ title in the same year.
They also pocketed $100,000 towards the funding of a school project and the championship trophy. For the losers, they received $75,000 towards a school programme and the runners-up accolade.
At the presentation ceremony, Ross and St. Jules shared the MVP accolade. They will both receive a pair of football cleats for their efforts while teammate Theria Bishop copped the Best Goalkeeper award.
West Ruimveldt’s Mc Garrell received the Highest Goal-Scorer award with 10 conversions. Both players will receive football cleats for their performances.
Wayne St. Jules of St. Angela’s was adjudged the tourney’s Best Coach while the Most Disciplined Team award went to North Georgetown Primary.
In the earlier third place playoff, South Ruimveldt edged St. Pius 1-0 compliments of Raven Jacobs 18th minute strike. With the win, South Ruimveldt walked away with $50,000 towards a school project and a trophy.
St. Pius received $25,000 towards a school initiative and the respective accolade. Meanwhile, North Georgetown defeated St. Stephen’s 2-0 to clinch the fifth position in the 5-8 section. Tiffany Johnson and Kezia Parkinson, scored in the 27th and 30th minute respectively.
Also, Enterprise gained a walkover from St. Agnes to claim seventh place. In the 9-12 section, Smith Memorial defeated 3-1 on penalty kicks, after normal time ended 2-2 to secure ninth place.
Alliyah Beverley scored a brace for the winners in the first and 18th minute while Talia Wharton and Alicia Oliviera scored in the fifth and seven minute correspondingly for the losing team.
Also, Winfer Gardens claimed the 11th position after defeating Tucville via a walkover. All teams finishing from 5-12 were presented with trophies.
