A Plaisance woman was yesterday remanded to prison after she was charged with attempting to take 2.5 kilogrammes of cocaine to Canada through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
The courtroom of Magistrate Leron Daly heard that on December 16, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Andrea Paula Winfield, 42, of Lot 12 Prince William Street Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, allegedly had in her possession 2.548 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Winfield, who was represented by attorney Max McKay, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail on the grounds that the accused had given the police conflicting addresses and there was no special reason to grant bail. According to the prosecutor, Winfield was an outgoing passenger at the airport. He said the Customs Officer had asked her for the Canadian address she was visiting and she failed to answer the question. Mangru said the customs officer became suspicious and proceeded to check her luggage, where the quantity of cocaine was found and Winfield was arrested.
Magistrate Daly remanded Winfield to prison until January 10, 2017.
