A young woman has condemned members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for their desultory action that resulted in the taxi driver who allegedly robbed her evading arrest yesterday morning.
According to the young woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, the alleged robbery occurred at approximately 1.30 am yesterday when she and several of her friends left an event at Everest Cricket Ground and boarded a taxi.
The young woman said she requested that the driver take them to Queenstown to drop off one of her friends, adding that other stops were to be made.
Having arrived at the Queenstown residence, the young woman said, her friend needed some assistance getting into the house, thus, she and her two other friends exited the car to offer same.
But before they could have entered the gate, she said, the taxi driver drove off with her bag containing her cellphone and other personal belongings.
After realizing what had happened, she contacted another friend and asked that they track her iPhone, which led them to a house in South Ruimveldt Gardens, where they observed the car parked outside. At this stage, they decided to involve the police and visited East La Penitence Police Station. But when they returned with several police officers, the car was no longer there.
Further tracking led them to Stabroek Market.
“After 2 hours of trying to catch up to him, I finally caught him at Stabroek Market parked in the taxi area. I approached him and asked if he had just picked up me and my friends to which he admitted, I then asked for my belongings and he pretended to not know what I was talking about,” she said.
However, not buying his story, the young woman said she reached over to the passenger side of the car where she saw her phone, which was being charged.
“When I asked for my bag, however, he claimed he didn’t know I left it and a passenger he just dropped off might have gone with it. I asked why he left with my things after we asked him to wait, to which he lied saying one of my friends paid him and told him to leave,” the young woman related, while adding that this was not the case.
She said the police who had accompanied her intervened, but instead of arresting him on the spot, they instructed him to drive to Brickdam Police Station while they drove behind him.
This, however, did not work out as planned as the driver managed to flee.
“I think the police should’ve searched his car and arrested him there since it was obvious he stole my belongings. He had already began to charge my phone! But they didn’t even ride with him to the station, they foolishly gave him the opportunity to get away,” she explained.
The young woman said the driver should still be arrested before he does the same, or worse to another unsuspecting passenger.
She said a formal report has since been made at the Alberttown Police Station.
