Yassin faces biggest test at today’s GOA elections

President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) K. A Juman-Yassin will face his biggest test at today’s Annual General Meeting when representatives of the national associations/federations meet to elect a new executive for the next four years. Yassin has been president of the GOA for 20 years but recently faced a barrage of criticisms from the media over the fact that this country has not been even remotely successful at the Olympic and other games.

Today’s meeting will be held at Olympic House, High Street and begins at 5pm.

Secretary General of the GOA, and former national cyclist, Hector Edwards, said yesterday that today’s agenda will be conducted as laid out in the GOA constitution.

“The agenda items will be in keeping with the constitution. The first item is the committee report for the last four years, the second item will be the audited financial statement, the third item the election of office bearers and the fourth, the resolution and motions.” According to Edwards the committee report, has already been submitted. He said that the report was submitted at the last Council Meeting as required by the constitution. That meeting was held December 1.

Edwards said that the report will be up for adoption at today’s meeting as per the constitution. Edwards also disclosed that at today’s meeting, a motion proposed by the Guyana Squash Association to split the assistant secretary/treasurer into two positions, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer will be decided today.

“That will have to be agreed upon,” he said.

Edwards said that that decision could be decided by resolution, which is the last item on the agenda or before.

“The meeting could determine the outcome prior to the resolution and motion item on the agenda,” he declared.

According to the Secretary General, persons contesting posts on the new executive will only be known at the meeting as nominations are made from the floor. He did say, however, that he would be seeking re-election once nominated.

“I’m up for reelection,” he said adding …”All the other office bearers are up for reelection.”

As per the constitution voting will take place by secret ballot and there will be a returning officer but to date the media has not been informed who the returning officer for today’s meeting will be.
