Charlestown woman, Angela Vigilance, was yesterday sentenced to three years in prison at the end of a trial that found her guilty of being in possession of 120 grammes of cannabis.
Magistrate Leron Daly handed down the ruling to the 43-year-old, who was arraigned on the charge in August. In addition to the custodial sentence, she was fined $180,000.
According to the prosecution’s facts, Vigilance had claimed that the drugs were given to her by another female residing in the yard. When the woman was detained, however, she had denied the allegation.
The facts related that on August 6, narcotics ranks went to Vigilance’s residence to conduct a search after being in receipt of certain information.
When they arrived, they observed the defendant throwing a black plastic bag and a quantity of transparent Ziploc bags containing what was suspected to be cannabis through her apartment window.
When the substance was later examined and weighed, it amounted to 120 grammes.
Vigilance appeared before Magistrate Daly on August 9, when the charge was read to her stating that on August 6, at Evans Street, Charlestown, she had 120 grammes in her possession for the purpose of trafficking. She pleaded not guilty to the charge.
