Defending men’s champion Paloma secured a hard-fought win while women’s titlist Silver Sands were held to a draw when the seventh annual Atkinson Brothers five-a-side football tournament commenced Tuesday.
Staged at the Kumaka Recreational Ground in Region #1, Paloma defeated Sheba 2-1. The men’s division is being contested in a knockout format.
Ronald DaSilva and Fazal Refino scored in the fifth and 19th minute for the victors while ester LaRose scored in the 12th minute for the losers.
In the women’s section Silver Sands and Vendetta battled to a 1-1 result.
Kate Campbell gave the challengers the early lead compliments of a second minute conversion. However, Renessa Boyal equalised for the holders as she found the back of the net in the fourth minute.
The men’s division winners will receive $200,000 and a trophy while the runners-up will pocket $75,000. In the women’s section, the winning team will pocket $100,000 while the losing finalist will receive $40,000.
