A security guard yesterday died at the Georgetown Public Hospital, days after he was struck down by a car at Haslington and had been discharged from the hospital. Dead is Michael McPherson, 54, of Lot 219 North Haslington, East Coast Demerara.
McPherson’s stepdaughter who declined to give her name, said that her stepfather was struck down by a car on December 18 at 4:00pm, while he was riding his bicycle to work. She said that the accident occurred a few streets away from their Haslington home.
The relative explained that on the day of the accident, McPherson had just penned his cows and was heading back to work in the neighbouring village of Enmore when tragedy struck. She said eyewitnesses told her family that the driver of the car picked him up and placed him in the car to rush him to the hospital but that the police who later arrived, stopped the driver from proceeding to the hospital. The stepdaughter said that McPherson was later taken to the hospital where he was treated for several days and was discharged on Friday. She said that the doctors told them that he was doing fine and that the best care for McPherson was home care and that was why they were discharging him.
The relative told Stabroek News that McPherson had sustained head injuries. However, yesterday morning before 9 am, the stepdaughter said that her stepfather began to cry out for pains in his head. She said they rushed him to the accident and emergency unit and minutes later he was pronounced dead by the doctors.
The stepdaughter related to Stabroek News that the driver of the car has been placed on station bail.
McPherson who was described by his relative as a very loving and kind person leaves to mourn nine children.
