A city magistrate granted $300,000 bail each to two men after they were charged separately with forging Republic Bank Limited cheques, when they appeared before the court yesterday.
It was alleged that on September 28, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, Christopher Gangaram, 23, of Lot 3 Houston, East Bank Demerara, forged a Republic Bank Limited cheque to obtain $1,200,000 from Naipaul Rambaran. Gangaram, a computer technician by profession, pleaded not guilty to the charge that was read to him by Magistrate Leron Daly.
Meanwhile, Kevin Singh, 24, of Lot 54 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara was charged with forging a Republic Bank Limited cheque to obtain $800,000 from Rambaran, on September 21, at Georgetown. Singh also pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Attorney Darren Wade, who represented Singh and Gangaram, requested that the court grant the men reasonable bail. Wade also informed the court that another accused was charged with a similar offence in another court and that case was allegedly settled with an agreement that the accused repay the virtual complainant the stolen funds.
Police Prosecutor Kevin London, told the court that he was informed of another accused being charged with a similar matter involving the virtual complainant but he was not aware of the outcome of the case. London told the court that he had no objection to bail being granted to the men but requested a substantial sum.
Magistrate Daly placed the men on $300,000 bail each. She also ordered Singh and Gangaram to report to the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, every Monday and Friday. The matter was adjourned until January 11 for statements.
