Leon Johnson won the Cricketer of the Year award while Shemaine Campbelle was adjudged Female Cricketer of the Year when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) held its 2016 awards ceremony last night at the Umana Yana.
Johnson, the captain of the national senior team which won the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional four-day tournament, was also the winner of the Regional Senior Cricketer of the Year for 2016 award for which he received the Rohan Kanhai trophy.
Rising star Bhaskar Yadram ended with the most awards, four. He received the (late) Roy Fredericks Trophy for being adjudged Junior Cricketer of the Year. He also received an award for being the Most Valuable Player in this year’s Regional U19 tournament and received two more awards for scoring the most runs in the Regional U19 tournament, and for taking the most wickets in the said tournament, an award he shared with Kevin Sinclair.
Laushana Toussaint copped the most improved female Cricketer of the Year award, while Gudakesh Motie, received the Lance Gibbs Trophy for being the most improved male Cricketer of the Year.
Devendra Bishoo was rewarded in recognition of his outstanding performances for the West Indies senior team, while Sachin Singh received two awards, one for scoring the most runs in this year’s Regional U15 tournament and the other for being adjudged the Most Valuable Player in the Regional U15 tournament.
Nigel Deodat was awarded for capturing the most wickets in this year’s Regional U15 tournament, while Joshua Persaud won two awards, one for scoring the most runs in this year’s Regional U17 tournament and for being the MVP in the said tournament.
The other individual winner in the special awards category was Keemo Paul who received an award for being the Most Valuable Player in the Regional U19 tournament.
Albion Cricket Club won the GCB President’s Trophy for being adjudged the Club of the Year.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Acting Prime Minister Carl Greenidge, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Nicolette Henry, West Indies Cricket Board Director Conde Riley and Guyana Olympic Association president K.A Juman Yassin.
