A youth was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail by a city magistrate after he denied being involved in a robbery.
The courtroom of Magistrate Annette Singh heard that on December 28, at Regent and Bourda streets, Daniel Gomes, 20, of 1938 Hummingbird Street, North Ruimveldt, while in the company of others robbed, Avinash Persaud, of a Samsung cellphone valued at $50,000 and $2000 in cash. Gomes pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Denise Simmons had no objections to the youth receiving bail. Simmons told the court that the item and cash were not recovered by the Police. According to the facts, the accused and another suspect were walking, when the companion snatched the phone from the virtual complainant and made good his escape. Gomes who was in the company of the suspect was arrested and charged.
Magistrate Singh granted the youth bail in the sum of $50,000.
The matter was adjourned until January 13, 2017, for statements.
