A pork knocker yesterday appeared before a city Magistrate charged with the murder of a Brazilian who was lured to his mining operation located at Chinese Creek Backdam, Mazaruni River, where he was attacked and chopped to death by a group of five men.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the murder charge to Nickel Anes, 24, of 372 North Sophia.
The charge stated that on December 28, 2016, at Chinese Creek Backdam, he murdered Francisco Da Conceicao in the course or furtherance of a robbery.
Anes was not required to plead to the crime.
Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently remanded the defendant and transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for February 7.
The incident, which occurred between 00:30 hrs. and 01:30 hrs., resulted in Da Conceicao being stabbed several times about his body, including his head, face and hands. He was later taken to the Bartica Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
It is believed that Da Conceicao was sleeping at a shop located five meters away from his dredge, when one of the suspects visited, and informed him that his dredge was under water.
As a result, Da Conceicao immediately went to the dredge where he was attacked and chopped by the group of men, three of whom were his employees.
