Happy New Year guys! I trust that you are all recharged and ready to take on 2017.
January is my favourite month; apart from the numerous sales, it’s basically the only time of the year where you can politely tell someone they need a wardrobe refresher. It is usually comfortably disguised under the title ‘Trends to Drop in (insert year here)’ in fashion magazines and on fashion blogs.
Before I launch my list please bear in my mind you need not go on a spending binge for new styles as its just old ones getting repeated in 2017 and you need not throw out the out of style items of 2016 because they will be back before you know it. This is just the way fashion works; it’s a cycle which is manipulated to make us feel frustrated during different seasons in order to push us to procure new clothes.
So here goes:
Chokers
I saw an advert for a party named high heels and chokers being advertised on Facebook for a local club. This is usually the indication that a trend has reached saturation point in Guyana. Chokers overworked themselves in 2016, everyone and their mother latched onto the trend like leeches. Give it a rest, it will be back again before you know it. Perhaps it’s just me, but high saturation levels of trends drives desirability down.
Skinny jeans
Do not completely ditch these in 2017, but try to be more willing when it comes to trying different cuts and concepts. Jeans are such a staple item so it is hard to eliminate an entire cut. The market seems to be exploring a more utilitarian approach to them. It is moving away from the figure flattering idea. Frayed hems and asymmetrical hems are also two good concepts I want to try and they both can be easily achieved via a YouTube DIY tutorial. Mom cut jeans and wide trousers are also now a thing.
Athleisure fashion
I didn’t fancy this period in fashion too much. While it’s comfortable to be running around in jogger type slacks, for me it sucked the desire to explore fashion. In addition I always have the idea that people are often on their way to or from the gym. Let’s ease on this trend for 2017
Cold-shoulder blouses
To be quite honest, I’m not completely over them but they’re already starting to bore me. It will not be long before they become over slayed like crop tops. One sleeve tops are the stylish twist option for 2017
Ridiculously high heels
In my opinion these should take a few years leave. Not only are most of them uncomfortable, but women look so awkward as if they are trying too hard to impress people when they are struggling to keep them on all night. Kitten heels and sneakers are the new chic! More so sneakers. I don’t necessarily even think that it is a trend thing for 2017. I think it’s a phase we are introducing; a constant everyday fashion staple. Designers are exploring with new material such as silk to make them more intriguing.
From the spring/summer 2017 apparently the trending colours for this season would be yellow and green. More green than yellow as brands are trying to play up their environmental awareness optics. Tiny silk scarves to be worn around the neck or on the hand as a band for 2017 have also been dictated to us by the fashion Gods in Europe. I don’t know how I feel about a sweaty silk scarf around my neck in Guyana but the hand band idea is definitely an option.
In conclusion, is it even necessary to listen to trend forecasts in 2017 or model their predictions? And to what extent does this affect personal style? It’s worth some reflection.
