The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against Kevin Stephens, the MMC Security Force guard who allegedly shot and killed his colleague Hubert Verwayne, has been set for February.
Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, on Wednesday fixed February 28 as the commencement of the PI into the murder charge against Kevin Stephens.
Stephens, a former MMC Security Guard, of La Penitence, Georgetown, is accused of murdering Verwayne, a driver at the same security firm, on September 17, 2016, at Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara.
When the accused was arraigned for the charge last September he was unrepresented, however, yesterday Attorney-at-Law George Thomas told the court that he will be representing Stephens.
The magistrate informed Police Prosecutor David Goodridge to summon his witnesses in the matter for February 28, as the matter was adjourned.
Verwayne, called “Bullet,” 36, a father of four who lived at Lot 710 Block ‘8’ Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, was shot twice to his neck in the attack, and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, had said the shooting occurred around 8 am, when the suspect, armed with a shotgun, accused Verwayne and other workers of making, “ill remarks” about his relative, and then fired at them.
Verwayne was fatally shot, while a co-worker was wounded as a result.
