A lone gunman yesterday afternoon assaulted and robbed a cashier attached to the Money Gram outlet located in the Spready’s Supermarket, at Port Mourant, Corentyne and escaped with approximately $800, 000 in cash.
A member of the supermarket staff related to Stabroek News that the man arrived at the supermarket on a motorcycle around 3 pm. “The man come in and the Money Gram had one person, and she been a like pack up everything, and he wait when the Money Gram empty,
when she been a count the money, and he go in and pull she pon she hair”, she explained. “ He stretch over he hand and pull she hair, and lash she head pon the counter and then jump over. He full all the money in he black bag”, she stated.
According to the eyewitness, the man’s motorcycle was parked outside, however, when he made his escape and attempted to start his motorcycle it would not start, which left him with no choice but to make his escape on foot. “He run get away after the motorbike bruk down, he had the helmet on he head all the time”, the girl noted.
She explained that the man emptied both registers which were filled with cash, into the back pack that he was carrying at the time.
Meanwhile, a few villages away from Port Mourant, at Lot 17, Kildonan Village, Corentyne, three men clad in black clothing entered the home of a woman, also at around 3 pm yesterday afternoon. Nirmila Devi Persaud, 50, who operates a small vegetable stand in front of her home, stated that she was sitting at the back of her kitchen cleaning fish, when the men entered through the gate.
According to the woman who was visibly shaken following the ordeal, two out of the three perpetrators were masked. She noted that the unmasked man carried a hand gun, while another carried a roll of duct tape. “Them duct tape me hand from outside, and drag me and carry me upstairs, and them tumble all them room and suh. Then, them duct tape me mouth, meh head, meh foot, and ask for money and gold,” she said. “The one with the gun take off the lil bob earring me had on me ears. Me had one purse here with couple twenty dolla, me think $80, them pick it up”.
According to the woman, a small girl was calling at her stand to purchase something, which caused the intruders to make their escape. “The lil girl a call and a call, and them na get no way fa go, them open the back door and run out, and run around and run through the front”, she stated, adding that the men continuously chucked her up during the ordeal demanding, “the money and the gold”. The men escaped with one gold earring, one cellular phone and $5080 in cash. Commander
of B Division, Ian Amsterdam when contacted by this newspaper stated that the police are currently investigating both reports of robbery, and that no arrest has been made as yet, in either case. However, a police source stated, that in regards to the Money Gram robbery at Spready’s Supermarket, investigators have received information on a certain individual, whom they were still looking for, as of late yesterday afternoon.
