(Trinidad Express) It was just last year that revelations were made by the Poultry Association of Trinidad and Tobago (PATT) that “expired” 180-day-old chicken was being imported into this country and sold to unsuspecting consumers.
Now, another organisation is raising concerns with the safety of imported pork, linking it to the prevalence of cancer in T&T.
The Trinidad and Tobago Farmers Union (TTFU) appeared before a parliamentary joint select committee yesterday, at Tower D, International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain, where its president Shiraz Khan said chemical-coated imported pork was putting the country’s health at risk.
Khan said the meat is coated with dangerous chemicals to keep it “fresh”, chemicals which in some cases have been banned in the United States and Europe.
He said this meat is purchased and consumed by uninformed consumers.
