Lawns are affected in a big way whenever we have heavy rainfall and flooding. We are well into the rainy season and with the heavy rainfall we are getting, lawns and some plants are showing signs of distress. There is just too much water for them to absorb. Since last week I have been inspecting some lawns around the outskirts of the city and for crying out loud, most of them are in need of help. Immediate attention must be given for their survival.
Now is the time to spike your lawn. Do so using a gardening fork. The spike should penetrate the soil to a depth of approximately 4 to 5 inches (as shown in the photo below). This would allow air and water to access the roots. Push the fork into the soil at intervals moving it backward and forward to loosen the soil.
It is important, if you want to maintain your lawn that you have proper drainage around it. Make sure that you keep the drains clear so that the water can run off easily. Those of you whose lawns are still soggy, or who may have lost patches of grass, after spiking your lawns you would need to spread a layer of sand and soil over the soggy lawns before replanting lawn grass.
Check your potted plants and clear any drainage holes that are blocked up. If you have excess water in your yard, try raising your potted plants off the ground. This will bring immediate relief to your soggy plants.
You would also need to apply plant food to both your lawn and plants as the nutrients would have been leached out by the rain. Miracle Gro All Purpose works wonders.
Remember, there are no short cuts to properly maintaining your lawn and garden.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
