Three men were last evening taken into custody by police following a raid on a Campbellville, Georgetown residence which unearthed an AK-47 assault rifle with matching ammunition and a 9mm handgun.
Police ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken, confirmed the find and arrests and told Stabroek News that two vehicles which were parked at the home were also impounded. He said that all three men are known to the police and have had “brushes with the law”.
He said that ranks from Guyana Police Force Headquarters, Eve Leary and his division acted on intelligence and went to the property to investigate.
A police press release last night said that 80 rounds of ammunition were recovered. It said that the three suspects, ages 29, 30 and 35 hail from Campbellville, Charles-town and Linden.
When Stabroek News visited the Lot 81 John Street, Campbellville residence yesterday residents didn’t know very much.
One resident related the sequence of events which happened at the property located east of Stone Avenue. “I only know about two of them living there but this afternoon, say around 5 o’ clock, three of them were on the verandah gaffing. I suspect that like something was going down because if you see police that come and quick quick bar off this street (John Street) head and my family in the next street call to say they were in that street too. I tell them children yall go inside but I stay outside to watch,” the resident stated.
The resident added, “The men didn’t try to run away or nothing suh the police went in and must be search up search up and bring out the three of them and speed away with them in the back of a pick-up but more stay and continue searching fine fine…dem aint leave till about say 7:30 (pm).”
Another resident who informed that he lived in John Street from birth, pointed out that the property was rented by two of the men who were arrested and the homeowner is overseas.
Asked if there were suspicious activities at the residence, the man said, “ I don’t know what you would call suspicious actions really but all kind of people is come there and most times the place is be busy at night.”
But one resident said that the occupants of the home were “not stuck up at all” and while they would not socialise with residents in the street were always cordial.
“Nah me ain’t get a problem with them. I don’t know if they good or bad or in between… what I know is they always raise they hand or so whenever you know. I thought they used to work in the bush or something because sometimes nothing don’t be happening there for days on end,” the resident said.
Police say that investigations are continuing and that ballistic tests are expected to be conducted on the firearms to determine if the weapons were used in any recent crimes.
