Former veteran policeman Leon Lindo was yesterday committed to stand trial for conspiring to murder businessman Mohamed Khan, whose decapitated corpse was found at Cummings Lodge in 2015.
The charge against Lindo, who was previously attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU), stated that between July 8 and July 10, 2014, at Eve Leary, he conspired with Lennox Wayne to murder Khan.
Lindo was implicated in Khan’s death after he was identified by Wayne, the alleged hitman, as one of the persons who was responsible for the murder of the businessman, hence the charge.
During the proceedings before Magistrate Judy Latchman, Lindo’s attorney, Glenn Hanoman, presented a written no-case submission to the court.
In response to Hanoman’s submissions, police prosecutor Bharat Mangru stated that there was sufficient evidence led by the prosecution through its witnesses, especially evidence presented by its main witness, Wayne. It was upon these bases that he urged the magistrate to call upon Lindo to lead a defence to the charge against him.
After an adjournment, the magistrate informed the court that a prima facie case was established against Lindo and that he would be asked to lead a defence.
Lindo told the court that he was innocent of the charge and he tried to discredit the prosecution’s main witness, Wayne.
When asked if he would be calling any witnesses, the defendant opted not to.
Magistrate Latchman then stated that there was sufficient evidence to have the defendant committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
Subsequent to the ruling, Hanoman requested that his client remain on the $400,000 bail which was previously granted. This request was granted by the Magistrate.
In September, 2015, Khan’s decapitated corpse was found at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara. One of the legs from the corpse was missing from the knee down, while the foot of the other leg was apparently severed. His head, which was in a plastic bag, was found nearby.
Khan was the owner of MFK Trading.
