Dear Editor,
The Leader of the Alliance for Change AFC, Mr Khemraj Ramjattan, continues to maintain that the AFC constitution is silent about a third term and therefore it’s his democratic right for a third term to be bestowed upon him at the National Conference. However, the Alliance for Change falls under the Friendly Society Acts under the Constitution of Guyana, where there is no provision for third terms.
Mr Ramjattan has done a splendid job as leader for the Alliance for Change, but I would like to remind him that although his contribution was outstanding, it’s time for others to contribute towards the development of the party. The mentality that without Mr Ramjattan the AFC would be dead, is wrong, because there are other leaders who are also capable and could take the party into the future.
As it relates to the rotation principle, most successful governments adhering to democratic principles remove their leaders after two terms. That is the norm worldwide, except for those countries with dictators who refuse to move and abuse their countries’ constitutions to remain. Let the harmony of the party continue in brotherhood as we host a successful National Conference.
Yours faithfully,
Pradeep Bachan
