A West Ruimveldt resident was on Thursday remanded to prison after being charged with breaking and entering a house of another and stealing home appliances.
Georgetown magistrate Faith McGusty heard that on January 16, at Cummings Street, Georgetown, Carlos Brathwaite, 36, broke and entered the home of Hemchandra Kissoon and stole a Sharp TV, valued at $69,000, an iron and a DVD Player, valued at $14,000 in total. Brathwaite pleaded not guilty to the charge. Police prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to Brathwaite being given bail, while citing the prevalence and nature of the offence that was committed. According to Blackman, on January 15, Kissoon secured her home and she and her children retired to bed. During the night, however, she awoke to a noise coming from her living room and when she got up and ventured outside, she noticed a man in her house. The prosecutor said that Kissoon gathered her children and ran over to the home of a neighbour, who is a police officer. When the officer went to her house, the accused escaped. He was later captured by the police.
However, according to Brathwaite, who professed his innocence, he was at Bourda, walking through the area when the police apprehended him.
Magistrate McGusty subsequently remanded the accused to prison. His matter was adjourned until February 10.
