Greg Stewart, the truck driver who was earlier this month found guilty of causing the death of a youth in a hit-and-run along the Flour Mill Public Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail for the crime.
The charge against Stewart, 41, of Lot 707 Kaneville, stated that on July 22, 2015, he drove motor lorry GJJ 7168 with trailer TAA 2203 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Dustin Crawford, 19. Magistrate Renita Singh found the man guilty of the crime on January 6 but had ordered that a probation report be prepared for him. After the reading of the probation report yesterday, he was sentenced to three years for causing Crawford’s death.
Stewart, a former driver at Massy Gas Products Guyana Limited for 20 years, was also fined $30,000 for failing to report the accident and the same figure for failing to render assistance.
Crawford, a rugby player, was on his way to the Namilco Flour Mill, where rugby players were about to tour the facility.
