A Linden man was yesterday remanded for allegedly dousing the mother of his children with an acidic substance, damaging more than half of her body, last Thursday evening in New Amsterdam.
Alfred De Younge, 34, of Amelia’s Ward, Linden appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, where he was read the charge of attempted murder. The charge read that De Younge with the intent to commit murder, caused grievous bodily harm upon Shondell Williamson of 13 Main Street, New Amsterdam.
Magistrate Marisa Mittelholzer refused bail for the accused and transferred the case to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, where De Younge is expected to make his second court appearance on February 20.
When exiting the court De Younge slapped one reporter’s camera away. He continuously hid his face when leaving the courtyard.
On Thursday evening, Williamson, 26, was returning to where she resides with her sons in New Amsterdam, when De Younge dressed with a wig and in a women’s outfit allegedly jumped out from the left side of the yard and threw an acidic substance on her. Williamson in her statement to the police noted that De Younge also wore a cap. “The person come out from the left side of the yard, the place was dark, I was like seven feet away, but as he got closer I recognized it was Alfred”, the statement read.
“I recognized that he had a small container in his right hand, a colour I cannot say, as I was going to call his name Alfred, he threw something on me that felt like hot water. Eventually my face, neck, back, chest, both hands and feet started to burn. I felt a burning sensation”, the statement noted.
In the statement, Williamson also recounted that, “Alfred has always been abusive to me”. De Younge allegedly ran to a waiting car after throwing the acidic substance on Williamson.
He was held in Linden after he was involved in a vehicular accident. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and then placed in custody.
Williamson has since been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is a patient in the Burn Care Unit. The couple have two children together.
De Younge had previously operated a car wash in New Amsterdam before relocating the business to Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
