A North East La Penitence man was yesterday charged with stealing over $16 million in airplane parts and other items.
Eon Griffith, 40, was read a charge which stated that on July 2, 2016, at Kitty Railway Line, he stole a quantity of airplane parts along with other items having a total value of $16,667,152, and which was the property of Trisha Persaud.
Griffith, who was to be charged alongside another, denied any involvement in the crime.
There was no objection to bail made by the prosecution but a request was made for Griffith to lodge his passport.
The court heard that the stolen items were not recovered. The prosecution also requested time for advice on the whereabouts of the other accused. As a result, Griffith was granted $200,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and ordered to report to the East La Penitence Police Station every Friday. His next hearing is set for February 14.
Meanwhile, also charged with theft yesterday was Mark Amos, who was read a charge which stated that he, between January 15 and January 16, at Bourda Market, broke and entered the stand of Nadia Persaud and stole a quantity of items, having a total value of $862,880.
He pleaded not guilty.
Police prosecutor Kevin London told the court that the items were found on Amos.
Amos, however, denied this allegation, while stating that he only had eight packets of Milo on him and the police accused him of breaking into the stand.
Despite his explanation, Magistrate Leron Daly remanded Amos given the fact that he had no fixed place of abode. His case was then adjourned to February 10.
