An 88th minute wonder strike from Jason Williams secured Camptown a 1-1 result against Riddim Squad when the second annual Petra Organization/ Limacol football tournament commenced Monday.
Trailing 0-1 at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda, the diminutive winger sent the sizeable crowd into a frenzy with an absolute gem of strike.
Skipping past his marker while cutting in from the left side of the field, Williams unleashed a curling right-foot attempt from 29 yards out which sailed into the top right corner giving the diving goalkeeper Ron Liverpool no chance.
Prior to the equaliser, Riddim Squad took the lead in a contest of few chances as Teon Jones scored in the 82nd minute.
Spotting the opposing shot-stopper off his goal-line, Jones lobbed a left foot shot from 30 yards out on the left side over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net. Both teams walked away with a point.
In the tournament opener the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Mahaica Determinators battled to a 2-2 draw.
Burly forward Eion Abel gave Mahaica the perfect start scoring in the second minute.
The lawmen were handed an opportunity to level proceedings in the 27th minute compliments of a penalty kick but failed from the mark as the effort sailed over the woodwork.
The equalizer was eventually fashioned in the 40th minute with Dwayne Charles etching his name onto the scorer’s sheet through a left foot strike from outside the box which flew over the goalkeeper hands and into the net.
At half time the score was unchanged but Mahaica retook the lead upon the resumption with Abel grabbing his second goal in the 56th minute.
Their lead did not last long as the lawmen restored parity one minute later with former Mahaica forward Quincy Holder sliding to direct a left side cross into the left corner.
Holder was then presented with a golden opportunity to seal the result in the 79th minute, racing away to be in a one-on-one situation with the custodian but fired a tame effort into the shot-stopper’s grasp.
Both teams earned a point from the contest.
The tournament will resume tomorrow at the same venue with Western Tigers engaging NA United from 18:30hrs and Santos opposing Ann’s Grove at 20:30hrs.
The following day the event will move to the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in Linden with Milerock battling Northern Rangers and Winners Connection facing off with Grove Hi-Tech.
The final matches of round one on January 29th will pit Uitvlugt against Eagles United and Pouderoyen against Den Amstel at a venue to be announced.
