Ravi Goberdhan, Guyana’s lone participant, attained 91 per cent in the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association oral and practical examinations last year.
Goberdhan, an umpire for the last six years, sat the examinations last December.
“It is a good feeling. I thought that I would have gotten a score in the 80s but fortunately I scored 91%,” Goberdhan told Stabroek Sports yesterday.
Asked what the future holds Goberdhan said that he is just looking to grow with the game, take his opportunities as they come and go wherever his duties take him.
The businessman, who hails from Berbice but now resides in Industry, East Coast of Demerara, confessed that he does have aspirations of umpiring at the Test level.
He lauded former test umpire Edward “Eddie’ Nicholls for inspiring him and supporting his journey.
“I got support from Eddie (Nicholls) and the others that inspired me to do well because I knew I had to represent not only myself but the others who went before me and I also had to set a standard for the ones to come,” he said.
“Meanwhile, WICUA secretary Vivian Johnson yesterday congratulated the successful participants on the association’s official Facebook page.
“I wish to announce the results of the WICUA Oral & Practical Exam Results for 2016. I want to congratulate all the successful candidates, especially those who topped the marks for a job well done. Becoming a qualified WICUA Umpire is a big deal,” Johnson said.
“It is a well-respected umpiring qualification that is recognized the world over. It is therefore incumbent on you to continue to put your best effort forward to be the best umpire you can be. To those umpires who were not successful this time, don’t be disheartened, dig a little deeper and take care of it this year. Again, all the best in your future endeavors,” she wrote.
Meanwhile the Georgetown Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (GCUSA) stated that it wished to congratulate Goberdhan on his achievement.
