Colin Alleyne, the man accused of battering to death elderly Montrose caretaker Danrasie Ganesh, was on Wednesday beaten by fellow prisoners after he reportedly made threats and hurled insults at other inmates and prison staff.
Alleyne, 23, of 77 Cemetery Road, Timehri, endured a beating at the hands of prisoners of the Lusignan prison, on the East Coast Demerara.
Stabroek News understands that Alleyne was transferred from the Georgetown Prison on Tuesday night, since prisoners there also wanted to harm him because of his behaviour. According to a source at the Lusignan prison, when Alleyne arrived at Lusignan, he began to issue threats and was verbally abusive to both inmates and prison officers.
The source said that the inmates who had enough of Alleyne’s insults and threats dealt him several lashes.
Deputy Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels told Stabroek News that Alleyne suffered a laceration to his forehead.
Samuels explained that the inmate was examined by a nurse at the prisoner infirm and was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for an additional examination by a doctor. The Deputy Director said that after Alleyne was discharged by the hospital, he was taken back to the Georgetown Prison.
The preliminary inquiry into the murder charge against Alleyne is slated to continue on February 10. During the inquiry, Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul was forced to adjourn the hearings due to erratic outbursts by the accused during the testimonies of witnesses.
