Dear Editor,
The Working Peoples Alliance Overseas Associates (WPAOA) have been following the issue surrounding President Granger’s rejection of the list of candidates for Chairman of Gecom submitted to him by the Leader of the Opposition as constitutionally required.
The WPAOA is concerned by the manner in which this process has developed.
This is the first time that a list was ever rejected; even if President Granger felt that some names were unacceptable there must have been a few that met the criteria of “fit and proper”. As a result we in the WPAOA feel that this matter requires President Granger to publicly address the nation explaining his rationale and his expectations. A meeting between former Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Attorney General Basil Williams cannot suffice. No one would want to be on a list for consideration when the criteria for appointment are not clearly enunciated and even in their succinct form appear to have been violated, and inevitably the process is allowed to degenerate into narrow party manipulation.
The President should also explain to the people why someone with the qualifications, experience and independence of Mr Christopher Ram was rejected from the original list.
Yours faithfully,
Keith Branch
Press Secretary
