Guyanese trio, Peter Abdool, Eion Jardine and Trevor Arno will be taking their talents to Trinidad and Tobago where they will play integral roles tomorrow night in the first World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth and Amateur Programme in the Caribbean and Central America.
Abdool, the president of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control will be tasked with the duties of supervising the professional bout on the card, while Jardine and Arno will officiate in the capacity of referee and judge, respectively.
Abdool, Jardine and Arno are scheduled to wing out this morning to the Twin Island Republic.
According to Boxu Potts, the former advisor to the TT Boxing Board of Control, ”The WBC is dedicated to the growth and development of the sport in the region and this project has received the support of its president Mauricio Sulaiman.”
Potts added that the outstanding fighters will graduate into the WBC ranks and will be eligible to participate in the planned Muhammad Ali International Cup.
“This will be the biggest event in youth and amateur boxing in the world and will rival the Olympic boxing competition,” declared Potts.
Tomorrow night’s card will be staged at the Daisy Voisin Hub in Siparia. The main bout will feature professionals Sheldono Lawrence and Nigel “Cow” Edwards over 10 rounds for the WBC Fecarbox light heavyweight (175-lb) crown.
Potts said the amateurs will be bidding for trophies and medals and an opportunity to impress with an eye on the opportunities available in the WBC Youth and Amateur Programme.
Potts said the launch of the WBC programme will reap rich rewards for the young boxers because there are now two internationally recognized entities for amateur boxing in the nation.
“We are on the threshold of really great things for our talented boxers who have been exploited and discarded in the past. Through the WBC they iwill now get the chance to earn a living in the sport,” he said.
