Corriverton couple pleads for help after fire destroys apartment

A young Corriverton couple is now  contemplating their next move after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their one-bedroom apartment on Saturday evening around 8 pm.

Vanie Melissa Suknandan, 19, told Stabroek News that she resided in the apartment with her husband, 19- year old Raj Ramnarine, at Number 78 Village, Corriverton. According to the young woman, she was on the road awaiting her husband’s arrival from work when the fire began. “Me bolt the door and go out and when me come in back me see me house catch a fire. All thing bun out, me ain’t get nothing”, she said.

The tearful woman noted that her neighbours immediately rendered assistance and formed a bucket brigade in attempts to put out the blaze and prevent other apartments in close proximity from being burned as well.

Suknandan noted that no electrical appliance was on or nothing was left lit in her house when she left to go on the road.

She further noted that when she heard of the fire, she ran into the yard and was rushing into the blaze in an attempt to save a few items, however, her friends who were on scene pulled her away from the blaze. “I don’t have nothing, me neighbour come and give me clothes”, she said.

Meanwhile, according to neighbours, the fire service arrived close to an hour after the blaze began. They noted that collectively they had already put out the fire but were unsuccessful in saving anything.

The couple who had been residing in the apartment for over two years now is pleading with the government and the general public for any sort of assistance, as at this moment they are depending on friends and family for their basic needs. Meanwhile, according to information gathered, about a week ago a blaze erupted on the verandah of a house located not far from where Suknandan resides. Stabroek News was informed that the neighbours who assisted Suknandan also aided in putting out that blaze before the fire service arrived.
