The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) says several of its systems have been hit by malware and other arrangements have to be made for billings and collections as of Saturday.
In an advertisement in Saturday’s Stabroek News, GWI said that the malware (software used to disrupt computer or mobile operations) was detected on Thursday at 7 am as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) employees were performing maintenance duties.
As a result, GWI said that the necessary precautionary measures were employed and servers were taken offline.
GWI said that it has engaged cyber crime personnel of the Guyana Police Force and other specialists to assist in the restoration of the system.
As the period of discovery continues, GWI said that it has made alternative arrangements for billings and collections.
It provided a list of banks and collection agencies which could be used.
