ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Trinidadian all-rounder Kevon Cooper is set to undergo surgery here after sustaining a broken nose in an on-field collision during Sunday’s night Regional Super50 game between Leeward Islands Hurricanes and Windward Islands Volcanoes at Coolidge Cricket Ground.
The 27-year-old, who is representing Hurricanes in the ongoing 50-overs competition, collided with teammate Gavin Tonge on the ropes at mid-wicket during the Volcanoes innings, as both players attempted to take a catch in the deep. Cooper had to be stretchered from the field and was taken to hospital here for assessment.
Before the incident, the seamer had sent down five overs for 29 runs and taken one wicket.
He is not expected to take any further part in the tournament which began January 24 and wraps February 18 but no formal word has come from the Hurricanes management.
Tonge, who pulled off the stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Darren Sammy, was unhurt in the collision and was able to continue bowling, finishing with two for 47. Volcanoes were dismissed for 149 off 28.1 overs, allowing Hurricanes to come away with a massive 184-run victory.
