Bounty Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Pizza Hut GCC were crowned the men and women’s division champions respectively when the Bounty/Antonio’s Grille one-day hockey tournament concluded Sunday at the National Stadium, Providence.
The event signalled the start of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) season, with Bounty GCC edging fierce rivals Pepsi Hikers 3-2 via a penalty shootout after regulation time saw the match ending 3-3.
Kevin Spencer, Kareem McKenzie and eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) Dwayne Scott scored in the shoot-out while Jamarj Assanah and Aroydy Brandied netted for Hikers with Andrew Stewart missing his effort.
The contest was a rematch from the earlier group round which ended 3-2 in favour of Hikers. On the other hand, Pizza Hut GCC made light work of rivals Woodpecker Hikers compliments of a 5-0 result.
Leading into the final, Pizza Hut GCC had recorded an astonishing 33 goals while only conceding once. MVP, Aliyah Gordon of Pizza Hut amassed a leading 11 goals which was almost double the next highest goal-scorer in the competition.
