The Guyana Police Force (GPF) climbed atop the group-D standings in the second annual Petra Organization/Limacol Football Championship after edging Camptown 1-0 Monday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
Quincy Holder, who scored in the 32nd minute, was the difference between the sides in a fixture that featured very few opportunities.
The GPF now has four points while Camptown remain in the cellar position on one point.
New recruit Dwain Jacobs almost gave the lawmen the lead in the 27th minute but his left foot shot was parried by the diving custodian.
Holder eventually broke the deadlock five minutes later. Racing onto the ball after the defender misread the bounce inside the right of the box, he rounded the advancing goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the empty net.
Holder almost made it 2-0 in the 54th minute. Sprinting onto a left side pass, he then cut his way across the body of the defender while heading into the centre of the box before unleashing a powerful effort which just went over the woodwork.
For Camptown, their best chance came in the 72nd minute through veteran midfielder Troy Prescod who rifled a powerful left-foot, free-kick 32 yards out, wide of the top left corner.
Meanwhile, Linden outfit Winners Connection was held to a scoreless draw by Kitty unit Northern Rangers. Both teams earned a point from the drawn result.
Another double-header is scheduled for today at the same venue. In the opening fixture at 18:30hrs, defending champion Milerock tackles Grove Hi-Tech while at 20:30hrs, Western Tigers will oppose Eagles United.
