Pepsi Sonics schooled the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans 82-72 in the Open division when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘League of Champions’ continued Thursday.
Played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, and sharpshooter Trevor Smith recorded a double-double of 25 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
He was assisted by Jason Squires with 14 points and five rebounds, Aubrey Austin with 11 points and Earl O’Neil who scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jermaine Reid chipped in with seven points.
For the university, Akeem Kanhai bagged a double-double of 19 points, 15 rebounds and five steals. Akil Lewis also recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds while Quincy Easton and Alista Usher added 16 and eight points respectively. Sonics dominated the contest from the opening whistle scoring 28 to Trojans 18 points to take a commanding lead at the end of the first period.
The Mandela Avenue based outfit outscored Trojans 13-12 at the end of the second stanza to lead 41-30 at half time.
Trojans failed to make inroads into the deficit even though they marginally outscored Sonics 20-19 during the often pivotal third period. The outcome of the matchup was sealed in the final quarter when both teams scored 22 points.
Meanwhile, Colts defeated Plaisance Guardians 64-56. Jonathan Mangra registered a game-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win. The next best scorer with 15 points was Mikhail Broomes while Timothy Thompson contributed a double-double of 12 points and 22 rebounds
For Plaisance Guardians, Andrew Johnson top scored with 11 points while Terrence Daniels recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and Delroy Critchlow netted 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Chipping in with eight points each were Jared Sears and Anton Fileen.
