A man who burglarised a house at Rose Hall, Corentyne on Thursday evening and escaped with approximately $500,000 in valuables, including jewellery, was later nabbed by police with the stolen booty.

According to a police source, a bag containing almost all of the items was found on the perpetrator at the time of the arrest. The source noted that the perpetrator was released from prison about a month ago.

Edward Mann, 69, told Stabroek News that he resides with his friend at Lot 403 Sixth Street, Swamp Section, Rose Hall, Corentyne, which was burglarised.

Mann explained that he left his home around 6 pm on Thursday and returned home around 9 pm. He stated that the house was locked but when he entered he noticed the refrigerator door was open. He said he phoned his housemate, Eddie Khan, 55, who was at work at the time and asked if he had removed anything from the fridge and forgot to close the door. However, he explained that when Khan said no, he then became suspicious. He then checked his bedroom and discovered items missing. “My wristband, my three finger ring, two married ring, my gold chain and my gold watch, all that was missing,” he said.

Khan, the owner of the house, noted that items that he was keeping in the fridge for his neighbour were also taken. “We get back part of the meat the police catch them with and give we back,” he said. “Them gone with $5,000 worth of fish, egg, seven pounds of pork, $3,000 worth of them small sardine fish, two Ziploc bag of crab worth $3,000. Them gone with all we bread and sugar and so,” Khan stated.
