Should the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) join gloves as it relates to the four-year plan submitted by the former, selected boxers could receive a stipend of $60,000 monthly.
This proposal was included in a four-year strategic development plan presented to the GOA upon request last week ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
According to President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, the four-year plan which will also be submitted to the National Sports Commission (NSC) “Is a comprehensive document which pilots the development of the sport toward the 2020 Olympics Games in Tokyo”.
Ninvalle opined that the stipend will assist the fighters and enable them to remain focused on the sport. “Less concerns about where the next meal is coming from so to speak.”
The GBA head pointed out that “This is the second time we will be giving such a document to the GOA which also entails the development for referee/judges.”
A proposal for coaches to be given a monthly stipend is also a part of the four-year plan.
Said Ninvalle “One of the highlight of the document is the proposal for a number of boxers to be given stipends but we have also listed the names of coaches who we think should also benefit from a stipend but not to the amount of what the boxers are getting”
Perusal of the document shows that Caribbean Middleweight King, Desmond Amsterdam and Christopher Moore who won the best boxer (youth) award at the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament are two of the standout pugilists who will potentially receive stipends. (Emmerson Campbell)
