A man was fatally stabbed during the wee hours of Sunday after he attempted to rescue an employee of a night club on Lamaha Street who had been attacked by three men.
As a result of the intervention, Sunil Singh also known as `Grey’, 42, was fatally knifed by one of the men who had already stabbed the night club employee Charles Valenzuela 21. Singh, Stabroek News was told, is a destitute person who would hang around the area.
The Police in a statement said that around 2 am yesterday law enforcers went to the Blue Martini Night Club at 169 Lamaha Street and closed it. Even though there is a 2 am curfew in place for clubs, several of them remain open after this time. The police said that after the club was closed, three men went to the club and attempted to enter but were told by Valenzuela who works as a bartender, that it was closed. As Valenzuela made attempts to keep the men out of the premises an argument ensued. This led to Valenzuela being stabbed by one of the men who the police say is still on the run.
Singh, who was present, the police said, intervened and was trying to make peace when the said suspect who stabbed Valenzuela turned and dealt Singh a lash to his head. “Singh then allegedly ran north into Railway Street, Kitty and was pursued by the said suspect who stabbed him several times,” the police added. According to the police, Singh was stabbed multiple times around 2.45 am on Owen Street, Kitty and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
When Stabroek News visited the nightspot yesterday, employees were tightlipped and did not provide any information. They stated that the fatal stabbing did not occur directly at the club, while noting that management could be contacted this morning.
Valenzuela of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was treated and sent home. The employee recounted that he was at the gate barring the men from entering but they managed to force their way to the stairs. He explained that he still managed to keep the men from entering the club and as a result of this one of the men became annoyed.
“One of the guys cuff me then I cuff he back and then he started threatening me and then the two guys that was with him take him away and but he continued threatening me”, Valenzuela recalled.
According to him when he went downstairs he armed himself with a baton and guarded the gate, however he noticed one of the trio running towards him and he ran upstairs. “By time I run upstairs and turn around he was very close to me and when I check I had already gotten the wound on my shoulder and the one on my lower back happened the same time but I didn’t notice it until I reach to the hospital,” he said.
Asked if he is aware how Singh was stabbed he responded in the negative.
He noted that he was stabbed with a knife.
The body of Singh is presently at the Hospital’s Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
